A brief history:

When Massachusetts was first
settled, after the pilgrims arrived
to "The New World".The Town
of Bridgewater was also settled.
As the "Northern" Area of
Bridgewater" became known as
North Bridgewater. As time
passed the residents in the
area decided that North
Bridgewater should be declared
a town unto itself. For many
years there was much
controversy over a name for
the town.
Names such as Standish, Avon,
and Allendale, are just a few.
None of which the residents of
the area really cared to name
their new town. As it stands a
local streetcar tycoon by the
name of Ira Copeland was
traveling through the Canadian
side of Niagara Falls area
when he overheard a town with
the name Brockville.
He formulated the name
Brockton from that.
Despite the history of
Brockville being named after
Sir Isaac Brock, who was an
adversary of the U.S. the
towns name of Brockton was
voted in by a margin of
1081 to 411 voting for
the town to be named Avon
on May 5th, 1874.
